Born Liberal Raised Right

Our founding fathers understood the passionate bent of human nature. They knew when they established our nation that, for a liberty-based government to succeed with minimal controls, it would require that the citizens each be self-governing.

For those who might not yet grasp what I am saying, I suggest that you check with a schoolteacher—they see this manifested every day in classrooms, which are microcosms of society. Students who have the most self‑control require the least supervision—they can be trusted do what is right whether someone is watching or not, and therefore can be entrusted with the most liberty. Such children can immediately stop talking when told to and are

generally faithful to obey the rules. Sadly, too few students such as this exist today. Young teachers can only dream of what it was like to teach forty years ago, back when the biggest problems were students occasionally chewing gum and chatting in class. Struggle for classroom control has become a consuming chore since parents began sending children to school who disrespect authority and lack self-restraint.

Still do not get it? Then ask a police officer about the importance of self-control—they are forced to use their Taser guns on people every day who lack the capacity to simply close their mouths and immediately do what they are told. Daily in America, Tasers are needed to subdue uncooperative citizens, who could have passed up some pain and might even have avoided arrest if they had just shut their mouths and followed the officer’s instructions. Certainly, many get tased because they are drunk or high, but plenty bring pain on themselves purely because they never learned from their parents how to close their lips and do what they were told.

Most who earn a tasing do not think they deserve it. They have grown up with an exalted view of their own importance, and so are merely exercising what they think is their right to express their feelings in protest of an unreasonable request by an authority. They feel compelled to say everything that is on their minds, and are literally incapable of submitting themselves to an authority greater than themselves. At the least, the kid who cannot stop himself from mouthing off to his parents or teachers is a candidate for a future Tazing. A little time surfing the Internet will verify what I am saying—video Web sites abound with clips of arrests made of mouthy, out-of-control grownups.

The bottom line is that whether it is in a classroom, a community, or a nation, self‑controlled people maintain order and make good citizens. People who never learned to control themselves or their passions do not. It’s really not that complicated.
